The Coastal Mangrove Recovery project focuses on restoring degraded mangrove forests along Kenya’s coastline. Mangroves are critical coastal ecosystems that protect shorelines, support fisheries, store carbon, and provide habitat for many marine and bird species.
The project establishes mangrove nurseries, raises locally appropriate species, and replants degraded tidal zones where hydrological conditions support long-term survival. Site selection emphasizes ecological suitability rather than simply maximizing planting numbers.
Local fishing communities, youth groups, and conservation partners participate in planting, monitoring, and protecting restoration sites. Community involvement helps reduce cutting pressure, improve stewardship, and connect restoration outcomes with local livelihoods.
Expected benefits include improved coastal protection from erosion and storm surges, enhanced fish nursery habitat, increased blue-carbon storage, and greater resilience of coastal ecosystems to climate change and sea-level rise.
