Mau Forest Restoration

The Mau Forest Restoration project supports the recovery of degraded sections of the Mau Forest Complex, one of Kenya’s most important water catchment ecosystems. The initiative focuses on restoring native forest cover in areas affected by deforestation, unsustainable land use, and habitat fragmentation.

Restoration activities include the planting of indigenous tree species, assisted natural regeneration, soil stabilization, and the protection of regenerating forest areas. These actions help rebuild forest structure, improve biodiversity, and strengthen ecosystem functions.

The project works with government agencies, conservation organizations, and local communities to balance restoration goals with sustainable livelihoods. Community engagement includes tree nursery development, restoration training, and participation in monitoring and maintenance activities.

Over time, the initiative aims to improve water regulation for downstream communities, reduce erosion and sedimentation, enhance wildlife habitat, and contribute to national climate and conservation objectives.
